The Technique

"Changes occur when during any activity, we decide to go against our habits."

F. M. Alexander

The Alexander Technique is a powerful instrument that is very useful to improve our lives. The Technique is a re-education process that gives us the opportunity to get rid of bad habits that can lead to pain and diseases. It is a method that is not easy to describe, however the classes/sessions provide a sense of lightness and well-being.

The Technique is a holistic method. The reason is because it tackles the cause of the problems rather than the symptoms, and for that reason, specific problems are resolved during the learning process. Students learn to use this method for themselves and the benefits of learning it are various, from the mental to the physical side.

When we were children, we used to move and act in a natural way, with a maximum equilibrium and with the minimal effort. However, when we grow up, we tend to accumulate tension and habits that interfere with our good use. Those habits are not obvious until we develop symptoms such as back pain or severe anxiety.

When we start exploring our habitual reactions to stress and other forms of pressure, we increase our conscious of ourselves and we start understanding how we manage ourselves mentality and physically. That increased sense of psycho-physical consciousness includes not only simple activities but also complex ones such as sports, acting or talking in public.

Mind and Body:

The Technique is not only about the body. However, many people come to experience it because they experience sever physical pains. F. M. Alexander mentioned that the body and mind are aspects from one unified peace where it is impossible to split both. For example, a headache is related not only to the physical pain but also to stress, anxiety and any other sort of dysfunctions.

The Technique promotes a change in the quality of our thinking that transforms our body instead of interfering directly with our postural habits. The method emphasis self-responsibility and together with postural and muscular re-education, leads to a more balanced emotional state.

The Technique teaches us to:

  • Reduce tension in our daily lives;

  • Prevent bad postural habits that can lead to pain, rigidity and fatigue;

  • Regain our natural equilibrium and allow us to move more efficiently;

  • Express ourselves in a more confident way.

The Technique helps us to:

  • Reduce back, shoulders and neck pain;

  • Deal with breathing and vocal problems;

  • Reduce headaches and migraines;

  • Reduce stress and tiredness;

  • Reduce anxiety (acting / speak in public);

  • Reduce Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
